SLEEP & PERFORMANCE

We have dedicated quit a few post about sleep in the past. Sleep & nutrition are crucial when it comes to recovery. Lack of sleep can lead to decrements in sport performance.

A decrement in running performance is seen in many studies (Oliver, 2009), but it also affects maximal & submaximal strength (Reilly et al., 1994)

Increasing your sleep time per night can actually increase your performance. In this famous study by Mah in 2011, basketball players increased their sleep time per night and saw improvements in sprint performance. Their free throw and 3 point field goal percentage also went up.

They also saw improvements in daytime sleepiness, mood, subjective ratings of mental and physical well-being.

Sleep is one of the best performance enhancing aids there is.
